When we look at players today, we see players who sign a huge contract only to give up. They give up because they have done what they have needed. They know where they stand as players, players that will never be real stars and will never have a chance to shine. There is always a need for a role player but a star player is no different. Salaries are measured and contracts are given to keep things in check.

Some players have signed huge contracts only to play average and not up to standard. Some players even go out of their way to play exceptionally in their final year before free agency. This way, they can demand more money because of what they have recently done. This is not a good way to measure a player’s ability because it has been forced. If the same ability is shown after the signing, it is okay.

Now we see that many people today want to be athletes. They want to be athletes because they can make a lot of money and can attain fame. Being a basketball player probably wouldn’t be as appealing if the money wasn’t so good. Do people still want to play basketball if they make the same as ordinary people? The answer is probably no.

Playing basketball is something that a lot of people enjoy. It is a game that is played by many and it can be very competitive. Sometimes people want to improve so much as to beat their friends. They see players of exceptional skill play in the NBA. They want to be in the same position.

FIBA is the governing body for international basketball. It maintains its own set of rules to help govern the association, which is made up of 212 countries and over 450 million players. The game of basketball is great to watch and play. Most of the time basketball players try to score on offense by making-up plays as they go. Sometimes, usually when a team needs a basket, the coach decides that he wants to run one of many set basketball plays that all teams practice.

There are many different types of basketball plays that can be called while a team has the ball. Some plays involve the ball handler being isolated against a defender. Other plays involve just one or two passes and then a shot. Still other basketball plays call for the offense to run a certain motion with picks, back cuts, or anything else the play might call for.

The time of the game when a play is almost always called is when the game is about to end and the offense needs a basket. Usually these basketball plays aren’t pre-set plays (plays that are known and practiced); often these plays are drawn-up during a timeout. A coach will decide which player he/she wants to take the last shot and then the coach will also consider what defense will probably be played (man defense or a variety of zones). Then the coach will devise a play to get the player of choice the final shot.

Basketball plays aren’t just for the offense, they can also be run by the defense. An example of a defensive play is a half court trap. For this play, as soon as the ball handler dribbles the ball over the half court line, two defenders will try to trap the offensive player against the half court line. Since the ball can’t be brought back across the half court line after it’s crossed into the offensive side of the court (that would be a back court violation) the ball handler is left with no choice but to turn the ball over, try to pass the ball, or call a timeout.

Organized basketball plays aren’t run on every offensive possession. Plays are usually only called when a team really needs to score because they haven’t scored in a while or the first half or the game is almost over. Basketball plays can be set plays that are worked on in practice or they can be drawn-up by a coach during a timeout while the game is being played.

Defensive basketball plays can also be called during a game. Usually defensive plays are used as a surprise. They are meant to force the offense into a turnover.

Called basketball plays aren’t run all the time during a game but they are run by both the offense and defense several times a game. The coach decides if and when he wants a play to be run and then he calls the play.

Women's College Basketball - History and Background

It is well known that basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Nesmith, but what is not so well known is the history of women's basketball. The inaugural women’s college basketball session was actually part of a physical education class at Smith College for girls in Conneticut.

The very first women’s college basketball game took place at Smith College for girls in 1893 where the freshman played against the sophomores. Unlike women’s college basketball games today, the game actually took place behind locked doors and men were prohibited from watching.

The rules of this first women’s college basketball game were altered from those of the original men’s version to enhance teamwork. The court had 3 zones and three players from each team of nine were allowed in each zone but could not move out of their zone. Funnily enough, these early restrictions in the women’s college basketball game are strikingly similar to the game of netball that is played by schoolgirls and women all over Europe.

Women’s college basketball began to spread quickly and the first game between two different women’s college basketball teams was played in April 1896 with Stanford beating Berkley. There were still 9 players on each women’s college basketball team in this inter-college game but instead of keeping the original rule where a player could only hold the ball for 3 seconds and must dribble it 3 times before passing this was changed so that a player could not run more than 5 feet before having to pass the ball. Once again, however, as with the first women’s college basketball game, men were not allowed to watch the game.

The formal rules of women’s college basketball were first produced in 1901 and went through numerous changes before developing into the game that is played today. One of the most interesting aspects of the early women’s college basketball games is that the basket was sewn shut so that the umpire had to remove the ball from it every time it was put through the hoop.

The familiar indoor basketball court that today’s women’s college basketball teams play on was not always made available to the women for a couple of decades after the sport began. Some women’s college basketball teams had to play on grass courts outside and did not have the chance to play on an indoor court at all.
